Google Ads In Our RSS Feeds

Posted by Hunter

We are now including Google ads in our RSS feeds. Right now it is just a test. This site is supported by advertising and we're hoping that this will help to defray some of the significant costs of developing and hosting this site.

Tom,

Actually, I'm glad you asked... This means I get to explain it for everyone!

RSS is a technology that basically allows you to 'subscribe' to a Web site. Instead of having to check the site frequently to see if it has changed, you can add the 'RSS feed' and then be notified when a new piece of content is available.

Blogs were what catapulted the popularity of RSS but it is now used all over the Web. The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Yahoo! News all support RSS.

To use RSS, you need to have a program that supports it.

On the Mac, this means Safari 2.0 (in MacOS X Tiger), or NetNewsWire. On the PC, Firefox supports it with something called 'Live Bookmarks'. Also, there is a program called FeedDemon and I know there is a way to get support in Outlook Express as well.

Here's some more info:

I use RSS all day - I have about 200 feeds in my feedreader and it allows me to stay on top of all these sites without having to visit them all the time.

Just another dumb question. Does this feature mess with the firewall at all? Also, this seems like a great tool but I have W98 and am not sure if it will support this.

Thanks,

Tom

No, it should run without any firewall changes at all.

Feeddemon - http://www.feeddemon.com runs on Win98.
