Las Vegas Monorail Enters Second Year

Posted by Hunter

While considered useful by some, the monorail is generally seen as a disappointment.

This LVRJ article discusses the challenges ahead.

LVRJ: Monorail: Year 2

"There was no need to reserve a spot on the Las Vegas Monorail for its first birthday last week. There were plenty of empty seats to go around as the $650 million train line entered its second year seeking new riders and elusive profits."

I believe there was a big management shakeup recently on the monorail. I understand why they built this where they did because they wanted to save money using existing "track". However, it is so inconvenient that I think it will only be used for longer trips. I wish they had built it right up the middle of the strip. They would have no problem getting ridership if this was the route. I only hope that they extend it to downtown and the airport.

Given time, the monorail should do fine. Congestion within the Strip corridor, which is bad on weekdays and unbearable on weekends, will only get worse as growth continues. When the monorail runs, it is a great alternative to cabs, and much cheaper. Of all the properties it serves, I think the Hilton benefits the most. I also think the Hilton did the best job of incorporating the monorail station into its property.
