Binion's A Loser For MTR

Posted by Hunter

Binion's in Downtown Las Vegas, formerly Binion's Horseshoe, is not posting good results for owner MTR.

From the RJ (via their horribly designed new Web site - doesn't work properly with Firefox or Safari!), sounds like things have not recovered:

Too much disrepair from the Becky era. The place needs a partial demolition. Keep the original Horseshoe casino if you can, but get rid of the Mint casino + tower.

MTR isn't willing to do something that big. Their idea of changing things up at Binions is girls dancing to Shania Twain CDs, which just annoys the slot players more than anything else.

It's the classic operator-over-their-head story, same as played out with the "New Aladdin" and elsewhere. You not only have to have money to buy, but also to rehab/redevelop, AND to absorb a few years in the red until you develop your image and repeat clientele.

Personally, I still think it's still got a hook as a unique and iconic property, even minus the "Horseshoe" name. But they're doing nothing to tie in with that, nor to create any substantial upgrades (room rehab, restaurant/bar dev't, new hotel tower). Abandoning the sports book (vs enhancing/improving/enlarging it) in favor of a mechanical bull is so contrary to the property image.

This place is a downtown anchor, but needs to be run better.

I agree with you 100% doc. The place could still capitalize off that former goodwill but they have demonstrated they don't understand their customers at all.
