Quickies: Wynn on The Strip, Leach on Nightclubs

Posted by Hunter

A couple of quick hits today:

Steve Wynn is the guest on this week's, The Strip Podcast. He talks about Macau, nightclubs, and more. According to Wynn, Tryst is the top netting nightclub in town and Tao is fiddling with their numbers a bit. The interview is interesting and features a fun example of Wynn's office at work. Steve's thesis on why spending is up is sort of interesting.

Second up, thanks to Detroit, this link to an article from Robin Leach - will the nightclub boom continue.

The more Wynn talks, the more I feel comfortable holding his stock for many years to come. He is just on top of his business. I just wish he would have mentioned more on Encore and what's after that for Vegas. Looks like we're back to 2008 for Encore opening now.

Steve can often be awkward in interviews, this one being no exception. Schorr, Drai, and a salad chomping Wynn all excited to spout out impressive numbers at once only complicates things. It was neat to see how his office runs, though.

When they got into the bit about celebrities at his resort and talent, was I the only one with an ear-to-ear smile at Wynn's response?

"..We're outgrossing the 4,000 room hotels, and a 5,000 room hotel, with 2,700 rooms."

"Are you bragging?"

I didn't really understand the part where steve was saying how he has to make all his numbers public, because they are a public company, isn't LVS a public company too or did I miss something....

LVS is public, yes.

The catch is that the company that runs Tao is not, just like Pure MG and Light Group aren't either - thus they don't have to always give the same level of detail since Tryst is a Wynn Resorts owned operation.

Things are going to get very interesting in the nightclub scene on the Strip when the Opium Group opens there venues at PH. Back in Miami, where they're from, they don't really have any other big nightlife companies with multiple venues with which to compete. They are the alpha dog of South Beach, and deservedly so as their venues there are sick. Look for Clash of the Titans redux, as PMG, Light Group and Opium Group do battle. Competition will be fierce, as there is a lot of money at stake as you heard Steve Wynn and Victor Drai discussing in the podcast.

"If you like the casino at Wynn Macau, then you will love the casino at the Encore, Wynn Resorts Ltd. Chairman Steve Wynn said.
Wynn said last week that the casino inside the $2 billion Encore, being built next to Wynn Las Vegas, will be similar to the spacious Wynn Macau casino, where half-walls and small boundaries make the casino seem smaller and give customers the feeling of a more intimate setting.
"It's like you're playing in a private gaming salon," Wynn said. "We're going to bring that to Encore."

Wynn confirms what we have been saying for ages... Its the design evolution we were talking about on last week's podcast and probably more on it tonight.
