Casino Design Photo of the Week: Palazzo

Posted by Hunter

Week two - another photo. This is of the atrium area between Palazzo and The Venetian. I think this area, while somewhat reminiscent of some Bellagio design features, is the most successful bit of the newer Las Vegas Sands property.

Thanks to mike_ch for the photo, part of one of his recent Strip Walk adventures.

So is this now a regular feature? If so, let me know if you need more pics. I was actually on The Strip several times last week (unusual for me, since I typically only visit once or twice a month). I'll have to upload them to Photobucket when I get home. :-)

I have a library of several thousands photos but submissions are always welcome.

For one off shots, just email them to editor@ratevegas.com. For a larger number of submissions, email first to coordinate delivery.

Any submitted photos may end up on the Web, app, etc... (i.e. make sure you're okay with your photo showing up all over).

It looks OK, but where LVS has cheesy looking umbrellas, Wynn has elegant parasols. :)

I don't have a photo, but Sensi at Bellagio is striking looking, both inside and out.

Shame on Adelson for such a blatant copy of Wynn's parasols. I think they just alternate display ideas from the Bellagio conservatory and Wynn.

On a positive note, it is a really nice space that everyone seems to enjoy.

Hunter-

"I can't just feature Wynncore every week..."

Why not? We already know Wynncore is casino nirvana. :-p

"Any submitted photos may end up on the Web, app, etc..."

Oh, you know that's OK with me. I'll look through my newly uploaded pics and find some gems for you (like some Trop renovation pics!).

"I don't have a photo, but Sensi at Bellagio is striking looking, both inside and out."

Oh, I do! Let me look through my archives and see where they're at.

Sheldon Adelson may be a finance whiz, but he's just not into design like Steve Wynn is and Jim Murren is. I think that's why much of The Venetian consists of "Bellagio knock-offs", and why much of Palazzo consists of "Wynn knock-offs". And if he does anything else in Vegas, don't be surprised to find "CityCenter knock-offs".

The spring display at Palazzo is their weakest out of all the seasons in my opinion. Everyone is dazzled when they first walk in if they don't visit Vegas often enough to know the difference between the design of the Palazzo and the design of Bellagio. Three weeks ago when I was in Vegas I walked passed the Conservatory at the Bellagio and then back to the Palazzo, and it is amazing that Palazzo is so far behind in the creativity of it all. While not on the same scale as the Bellagio gardens, the space should be more than just recycled ideas. The only difference between this display and last spring's display is that there aren't the LED lights simulating rain.

However, the Chinese New Year looked quite cool as did the winter display with the cranberries and snow falling from the ceiling. Usually Robin Leach does a report on the new displays, but in the case of the new (old) display at the Palazzo, there is nothing to report.

Actually, these umbrellas are not a knockoff of Wynn, they're a knockoff of Bellagio:

I will say that large amounts of Palazzo are aped from Bellagio, but that's fine with me because, A, I think Bellagio is great and prefer it to the Wynn/Encore/MGM Grand/Palms/Station "you're in Vegas, at a casino, let's not pretend this place is something it's not" snoozefests. And B, because MGM has messed with Bellagio in places that I don't like and Palazzo actually has some of that. Like, the opera music in the lobby and outside. I wish it'd sort of extend into the casino instead of Top 40, but oh well.

Mike C-

Yes, the umbrellas are knock-offs of Bellagio... But I can see other parts of Palazzo that are knock-offs of Bellagio and knock-offs of Wynn. I just find it uninteresting and unimaginative.

Well, I think you already know where I stand on this... But I feel like saying it again. I actually like that Palms, Wynn, Encore, M, and Aria aren't pretending to be something else (like Venetian and Palazzo are), and stand as their own buildings with their own designs. And regarding the "Italianate design", I have to agree with Blackjacker at VegasTripping that if Bellagio is "Lake Como Italian", then Venetian and Palazzo are "Jersey Shore Italian(?)".
